   Grandad, why are you reading out the garden rules as if you were in the state parliament? And what do I need the folding rule for?

   Hört, hört! Paragraf neun: Die zur Abgrenzung der Parzellen gepflanzten Hecken dürfen die von der Mitgliederversammlung beschlossene Höhe von 1,25 Metern nicht überschreiten. Miss mal die Hecke von Brodersens.

   Hear, hear! Section nine: hedges planted to separate the plots must not exceed the height of 1.25 metres adopted by the general meeting. Now measure the Brodersens' hedge.

   One metre thirty-seven. So what now? Are you going to call the police, or write the chairman another letter?

   Zwölf Zentimeter zu viel, glasklar! Sähe der Vorsitzende das, würfe er Brodersen samt Hecke hochkant raus.

   Twelve centimetres over, as clear as day! If the chairman saw that, he'd throw Brodersen out on his ear, hedge and all.

   Ich hab unsere Hecke auch gemessen, als du Kaffee gekocht hast: eins zweiundsechzig. Das sind siebenunddreißig Zentimeter zu viel, Opa.

   I measured our hedge too, while you were making coffee: one sixty-two. That's thirty-seven centimetres over, Grandad.

   Außerdem steht da hinten eine Tanne, und Nadelbäume sind laut Paragraf sechs verboten. Und wo ist das vorgeschriebene Drittel Gemüse? Wir haben drei Tomaten und einen Grill.

   Besides, there's a fir tree at the back, and conifers are banned under section six. And where's the compulsory third for vegetables? We've got three tomato plants and a barbecue.

   Ich kann schweigen wie ein Grab, Opa. Aber Schweigen hat seinen Preis: eine Hängematte, zwischen dem Apfelbaum und der Tanne, die es offiziell gar nicht gibt.

   I can keep as quiet as the grave, Grandad. But silence has its price: a hammock, between the apple tree and the fir tree that officially doesn't exist.
