   Leute, ich hab beim Aufräumen meines Handys unseren Gruppenchat von 2016 gefunden. Er heißt immer noch „Fly Squad“, mit drei Flammen dahinter.

   Guys, while I was clearing out my phone I found our group chat from 2016. It's still called 'Fly Squad', with three flames after it.

   Please delete it unread, especially since back then I wrote every message in capitals. That's more embarrassing than any baby photo.

   Hier, 14. Juli 2016, kurz vor Mitternacht, Rasmus: „ALTER HAB AM PARADIES EIN RELAXO GEFANGEN BIN SO FLY ISSO!!!!“ Und darunter Malou: „krass, läuft bei dir“.

   Here, 14 July 2016, just before midnight, Rasmus: 'DUDE CAUGHT A SNORLAX AT THE PARADIES AM SO FLY TRUE THAT!!!!' And underneath, Malou: 'epic, you're on fire'.

   Zu meiner Verteidigung: Ein am zweiten Tag von Pokémon Go im Paradiespark gefangenes Relaxo war damals eine Sensation, wohingegen ihr beide nur Taubsis hattet.

   In my defence: a Snorlax caught in the Paradies park on Pokémon Go's second day was a sensation back then, whereas you two only had Pidgeys.

   Mich fasziniert eher die Syntax: kein Subjekt, kein Komma, dafür vier Ausrufezeichen. Ein gleichermaßen von Pubertät und Pokémon geprägter Text, würde meine Doktormutter sagen.

   What fascinates me more is the syntax: no subject, no commas, but four exclamation marks. A text shaped in equal measure by puberty and Pokémon, as my supervisor would say.

   Und dein „läuft bei dir“ darunter, Malou? Das war schon 2016 ein Fossil, nämlich das Jugendwort des Jahres 2014.

   And your 'you're on fire' underneath, Malou? That was already a fossil in 2016: it was the Youth Word of the Year in 2014.

   Malou war uns halt immer zwei Jahre hinterher, soweit man das bei Jugendsprache überhaupt messen kann. Heute sagt das zum Glück kein Mensch mehr.

   Malou was always two years behind us, as far as you can even measure that with youth slang. Luckily nobody says it any more.
