   Hello, Ms Offermann. I'd need a loan of 9,000 euros for a new camera by May, because that's when the wedding season starts.

   Ich habe mir die von Ihnen eingereichten Unterlagen schon angesehen, Frau Hilgers. Sie sind seit vierzehn Monaten selbstständig, richtig?

   I've already looked at the documents you submitted, Ms Hilgers. You've been self-employed for fourteen months, is that right?

   Vierzehn Monate und drei Tage, ja. Davor habe ich bei einem Werbefotografen in Köln vor allem Kabel geschleppt und Kaffee gekocht.

   Fourteen months and three days, yes. Before that, at an advertising photographer's in Cologne, I mostly carried cables and made coffee.

   That's exactly where the problem lies. With self-employed customers we want to see two completed financial years, and you only have one, with a profit of 21,000 euros.

   Die Bank glaubt leider an Kontoauszüge, nicht an die Liebe. Ohne zweites Geschäftsjahr gibt es keinen Kredit, es sei denn, Sie bringen einen Bürgen mit.

   The bank, I'm afraid, believes in bank statements, not in love. Without a second financial year there's no loan, unless you bring a guarantor.

   A guarantor? My father still thinks my going freelance is a phase. The only thing he'd vouch for is that I'll regret it.

   Then here's my suggestion: lease the camera through our partner, Deutsche Leasing. The instalments are business expenses, and after three years you swap the camera for the next model.

    Eben, das ist ja der Witz. Man bedenke, was eine drei Jahre lang durch Sektempfänge und Regenschauer geschleppte Kamera dann noch wert ist. Und unter uns: Ich heirate im September und habe noch keine Fotografin.

    Exactly, that's the whole point. Just think what a camera lugged through three years of champagne receptions and downpours will be worth by then. And between us: I'm getting married in September and I still haven't got a photographer.
