   Frau Dr. Wendland, danke, dass Sie mich kurzfristig einschieben. Ich habe am Samstag meinen Laptop im Katamaran nach Friedrichshafen liegen lassen, und mit ihm drei Kapitel meiner Bachelorarbeit.

   Dr Wendland, thank you for fitting me in at short notice. On Saturday I left my laptop on the catamaran to Friedrichshafen, and three chapters of my Bachelor's thesis with it.

   Und die Reederei hat ihn nicht gefunden, nehme ich an. Eine Sicherungskopie gibt es vermutlich auch nicht, sonst säßen Sie nicht so zerknirscht vor mir.

   And the ferry company hasn't found it, I take it. And presumably there's no backup either, or you wouldn't be sitting in front of me looking so contrite.

   Doch, eine vom März, aber seitdem habe ich die ganze Auswertung der Stichlingsversuche gemacht. Ehrlich gesagt bin ich gerade komplett lost.

   There is, one from March, but I've done the whole analysis of the stickleback experiments since then. To be honest, I'm totally lost right now.

   Das hört man. Ihre Arbeit bedarf also noch einiger Kapitel, und Ihre E-Mail von gestern Abend bedarf einer Erklärung: Sie haben sie mit „Ehrenfrau“ unterschrieben.

   I can hear that. So your thesis still needs several chapters, and your e-mail from last night needs an explanation: you signed it 'Ehrenfrau', woman of honour.

   Oh nein, das war mein kleiner Bruder! Der hat meine Handysignatur geändert, und seit der Laptop weg ist, schreibe ich alles vom Handy. Das Prüfungsamt hat also auch so eine Mail.

   Oh no, that was my little brother! He changed the signature on my phone, and since the laptop went I've been writing everything on my phone. So the exams office has an e-mail like that too.

   Dann wird man sich dort Ihres Antrags sicher mit besonderer Aufmerksamkeit annehmen. Ich jedenfalls habe erst in der Prüfungsordnung nachgesehen, ob wir diesen Titel inzwischen verleihen.

   Then I'm sure they'll give your application their particular attention there. For my part, I first looked in the examination regulations to see whether we award that title these days.

   I wish the ground would swallow me up. But will you still support my application for an extension? Two weeks would be enough for me.

   Über die Fristverlängerung entscheidet der Prüfungsausschuss, aber meine Stellungnahme wird dort durchaus gelesen. Zwei Wochen befürworte ich, allerdings unter einer Bedingung.

   The examination board decides on extending the deadline, but my statement certainly gets read there. I'll back two weeks, but on one condition.

    That goes without saying. No: in July you'll present your stickleback data at our conference on shoaling behaviour, in English, to two hundred people. An Ehrenfrau, I'm told, keeps her word.
