   Enno, mach mal lauter, jetzt geht's ums Wahlalter. Die junge Frau vom Landesschülerrat redet ja vernünftiger als die drei Herren neben ihr zusammen.

   Enno, turn it up, now they're on to the voting age. That young woman from the state pupils' council talks more sense than the three gentlemen next to her put together.

   Reden kann sie, keine Frage. Trotzdem, Wählen bedarf einer gewissen Reife, und die hat man mit sechzehn nun mal meistens noch nicht.

   She can talk, no question. All the same, voting calls for a certain maturity, and at sixteen most people just don't have it yet.

   Wer mit sechzehn wählen darf, müsste dann konsequenterweise auch Verträge unterschreiben und für alles haften. Wo soll das denn hinführen?

   Anyone who can vote at sixteen ought logically to be able to sign contracts and be liable for everything too. Where's that supposed to end?

   Bei der Kommunalwahl und der Europawahl darf ich doch schon, Mama. Einen Handyvertrag hab ich deswegen trotzdem nicht bekommen.

   I can already vote in local and European elections, Mum. And I still didn't get a phone contract out of it.

   Genau das hat mein Vater 1970 auch gesagt, als das Wahlalter von einundzwanzig auf achtzehn gesenkt wurde. Zwei Jahre später hab ich Willy Brandt gewählt, und er hat es mir nie verziehen.

   That's exactly what my father said in 1970, when the voting age was lowered from twenty-one to eighteen. Two years later I voted for Willy Brandt, and he never forgave me.

   Das war doch was ganz anderes, damals gab's noch kein TikTok. Heute sagt einem der Algorithmus, wen man wählen soll, wenngleich ich Enno natürlich nicht für dumm halte.

   That was completely different, there was no TikTok back then. These days the algorithm tells you who to vote for, although of course I don't think Enno's stupid.

    And you're the one boasting about your maturity, Verena? In 1998 you missed your first general election because you were on the Baltic coast with your boyfriend at the time and had forgotten to vote by post.
