Day 123: Praising a Terrible Painting

   Die Frage für heute: Darf man ein furchtbares Bild loben, nur weil ein Freund es gemalt hat? Ich sage nein, man muss schonungslos ehrlich sein.

   Today's question: are you allowed to praise a terrible painting just because a friend painted it? I say no, you have to be brutally honest.

   Immer? Mit der Wahrheit konfrontiert, fängt dein Freund vielleicht an zu weinen. Eine aus Mitleid gesagte Lüge tut doch keinem weh.

   Always? Faced with the truth, your friend might start crying. A lie told out of pity doesn't hurt anybody.

   Bei Kant darf man nicht mal einen Mörder anlügen, der an der Tür nach deinem Freund fragt, hat Herr Yıldız erzählt. Dann erst recht nicht bei einem Bild.

   According to Kant, you mustn't even lie to a murderer who comes to the door asking for your friend, Mr Yıldız told us. So you certainly can't lie about a painting.

   Kant hat bestimmt nie ein selbst gemaltes Bild geschenkt bekommen. Außerdem heiße ich Wilma, nicht Kant, und lüge lieber, als jemanden traurig zu machen.

   I bet Kant never got given a home-made painting. Besides, my name's Wilma, not Kant, and I'd rather lie than make someone sad.

   Und wenn er dann weitermalt, weil du ihn gelobt hast? Von allen gelobt, hängt er sein nächstes Bild im Flur auf, und alle lachen.

   And what if he then keeps on painting because you praised him? Praised by everyone, he hangs his next picture in the corridor, and everybody laughs.

   Dann sag ich eben was Wahres, was trotzdem nett ist. Bei dem neben dem Sekretariat aufgehängten Pferd mit den fünf Beinen würde ich sagen: „Tolle Farben!“

   Then I'll just say something true that's still nice. With that horse with five legs hanging next to the school office, I'd say: 'Great colours!'

   Wer sagt denn, dass das ein Pferd ist? Genauer betrachtet, könnte es auch ein Hund sein, und das fünfte Bein ist der Schwanz.

   Who says it's a horse? Looked at more closely, it could be a dog, and the fifth leg is its tail.

   Ein Hund, so groß wie ein Pferd, mit einem Schwanz nach unten? Hugo, da fragt sich doch jeder, was uns der Künstler damit sagen will.

   A dog as big as a horse, with its tail pointing down? Hugo, everybody wonders what the artist is trying to tell us.

   Der Künstler will sagen: Das ist unser Hund Keks. In den Sommerferien mit Wasserfarben gemalt, hat das Bild meine Oma zum Weinen gebracht, vor Freude.

   The artist wants to say: that's our dog, Keks. Painted in watercolours over the summer holidays, the picture made my grandma cry, with joy.

    Oh. Also, ähm, die Farben sind wirklich schön, Hugo, und das ist jetzt nicht geflunkert, ehrlich.

    Oh. Well, um, the colours really are lovely, Hugo, and I'm not fibbing now, honestly.

    Fürs Protokoll: Die aus Mitleid gesagte Wahrheit gibt es also auch. Nächstes Mal male ich Keks schlafend im Körbchen, da liegt der Schwanz unter der Decke.

    For the minutes: so the truth told out of pity exists too. And next time I'll paint Keks asleep in his basket, where his tail's under the blanket.
