   Opa, wir proben noch mal von vorn, bevor Oma vom Friseur zurückkommt. Du bist Ritter Wartelang, du stehst auf deiner Burg und wartest auf dein Paket.

   Grandad, let's rehearse it from the top again before Grandma gets back from the hairdresser's. You're Sir Waitalong, you're standing on your castle, waiting for your parcel.

   Fürwahr, es ward, äh ... Moment, gleich hab ich's. Wie fing der Text noch mal an, Elena?

   Forsooth, it came to pass, er... Hang on, I've nearly got it. How did my lines start again, Elena?

   „Fürwahr, es ward Mittag, und alsbald bekomme ich ein Paket in meine Burg geliefert!“ Das ist ein einziger Satz, Opa, und gestern konntest du ihn noch.

   'Forsooth, noon is come, and anon I shall have a parcel delivered to my castle!' It's one sentence, Grandad, and you knew it yesterday.

   Also: „Fürwahr, es ward Mittag, und alsbald bekommt die Burg mich in ein Paket geliefert!“ Hm, irgendwas stimmt da nicht, oder?

   Right: 'Forsooth, noon is come, and anon the castle shall have me delivered in a parcel!' Hm, something's not right there, is it?

   Dann wirst du eingepackt, und Oma bekommt dich zum Geburtstag zugestellt. Eigentlich gar keine schlechte Idee, aber jetzt komme ich als Paketbotin.

   Then you get wrapped up, and Grandma gets you delivered for her birthday. Not a bad idea, actually, but now I come on as the delivery woman.

   Und ich rufe meinen langen Satz über den Burggraben: „Holde Botin, harre ein Weilchen, ich öffne dir jedweden ...“ Äh, jedweden was?

   And I call my long sentence across the moat: 'Fair messenger, tarry a while, I shall open for thee each and every...' Er, each and every what?

   Riegel, Opa, jedweden Riegel! Aber die Botin wartet sowieso nicht, sie wirft nur einen Zettel über den Graben: „Wir haben Sie leider nicht angetroffen.“

   Bolt, Grandad, each and every bolt! But the delivery woman doesn't wait anyway; she just throws a card across the moat: 'Sorry we missed you.'

   Nicht angetroffen? Der Ritter steht doch direkt auf der Mauer! Das ist ja wie bei mir mit meinen Paketen, nur ohne Rüstung.

   Missed me? The knight's standing right there on the wall! That's just like me and my parcels, only without the armour.

   Genau, das ist die Pointe. Und auf dem Zettel steht: „Euer Paket ward beim Nachbarn abgegeben“, und der Nachbar ist der Drache.

   Exactly, that's the punchline. And the card says: 'Your parcel hath been left with a neighbour', and the neighbour is the dragon.

    Beim Drachen, herrlich! Und dann kommt meine große Rede, die mit Schwert und Ehre und Beschwerde an die Zentrale, oder?

    With the dragon, brilliant! And then comes my big speech, the one with the sword and honour and a complaint to head office, right?

    Die hab ich gestrichen, Opa. Du sagst nur noch ein einziges Wort, und zwar so empört wie am Telefon mit der Hotline: „Mitnichten!“

    I've cut it, Grandad. You only say one single word, and as outraged as when you're on the phone to a hotline: 'Nay!'

    Mitnichten! Das sitzt, fürwahr, aber verrat Oma bloß nicht, dass mein Text jetzt kürzer ist als der auf ihrer Geburtstagskarte.

    Nay! Word-perfect, forsooth, but don't you dare tell Grandma my part is now shorter than the words on her birthday card.
