   Mrs Wendler, as finance director of Waffelwerk 4b, I can report 312 euros' profit, after deducting flour, eggs and the broken waffle iron.

   Donnerwetter, Rosalie, da kann meine Bausparkasse einpacken. Und wofür möchte die Finanzchefin das Geld ausgeben?

   Goodness, Rosalie, my building society can't compete with that. And what would the finance director like to spend the money on?

   Für die Klassenfahrt, und zwar nicht in die Jugendherberge um die Ecke, sondern an die Nordsee. Man nehme den Gewinn, lege ihn aufs Klassenkonto, und schon ist der Bus bezahlt.

   On the class trip, and not to the youth hostel round the corner, but to the North Sea. Take the profit, put it into the class account, and the coach is paid for.

   Schöne Idee, aber ein Reisebus an die Nordsee kostet gut zweitausend Euro. Selbst mit zweihundert Waffeln mehr stünden wir noch lange nicht am Strand.

   Nice idea, but a coach to the North Sea costs a good two thousand euros. Even with two hundred more waffles, we'd still be a long way from the beach.

   Ertappt. Ich dachte an eine Spende an die Gießener Tafel, die jede Woche Lebensmittel an Familien ausgibt, denen das Geld nicht reicht. Das hülfe dort wirklich.

   Caught me. I was thinking of a donation to the Gießen food bank, which hands out food every week to families who don't have enough money. That would really help there.

   Das ist edel, aber ungerecht gegenüber unseren Aktionären. Die Eltern haben schließlich das Startkapital gestellt: Mehl, Eier, drei Waffeleisen und den Strom.

   That's noble, but unfair to our shareholders. After all, the parents put up the start-up capital: flour, eggs, three waffle irons and the electricity.

   Eine Dividende, und zwar in Waffeln: pro Kind zwei Stück für die Eltern, frisch gebacken beim Elternabend. Das kostet uns fast nichts, es sei denn, der Hausmeister stellt sich wieder dreimal an.

   A dividend, paid in waffles: two per child for the parents, freshly baked at parents' evening. It costs us next to nothing, unless the caretaker queues up three times again.

    Waffeln als Dividende, darauf ist an der Frankfurter Börse noch keiner gekommen. Und wenn ich dir empföhle, den Rest zu teilen: halb für die Tafel, halb für einen Ausflug ins Mathematikum?

    Waffles as a dividend: nobody at the Frankfurt Stock Exchange has ever thought of that. And if I were to recommend splitting the rest: half for the food bank, half for a trip to the Mathematikum?
