   Frau Hähnel, Herr Böhme, ich habe Ihr Papier zweimal gelesen, beim zweiten Mal mit Blutdrucktablette. Eine Viertagewoche bei vollem Gehalt, ausgerechnet auf dem Bau?

   Ms Hähnel, Mr Böhme, I've read your paper twice, the second time with a blood pressure pill. A four-day week on full pay, in construction of all places?

   Von weniger Arbeit steht da nichts: viermal neuneinhalb Stunden statt fünfmal acht. Auf die Woche gerechnet, fehlen zwei, und die holen wir bei Anfahrt und Rüstzeiten wieder rein.

   There's nothing in it about less work: four times nine and a half hours instead of five times eight. Over the week that's two short, and we'll make those up on travel and set-up time.

   Neuneinhalb Stunden auf dem Gerüst, wenn es im Januar um halb fünf dunkel wird? Das bedarf einer Baustelle mit Flutlicht und eines Bauherrn mit Engelsgeduld.

   Nine and a half hours on the scaffolding, when it gets dark at half past four in January? That calls for a site with floodlights and a client with the patience of a saint.

   Das Flutlicht haben Sie letzten Winter selbst angeschafft. Und Engelsgeduld braucht eher, wer Gesellen sucht: Drei hat uns die Konkurrenz in Markkleeberg abgeworben, mit der Viertagewoche.

   You bought the floodlights yourself last winter. And it's whoever's looking for tradesmen who needs the patience of a saint: the competition in Markkleeberg has poached three of ours with a four-day week.

   Dann hat Markkleeberg bald Gesellen und keine Aufträge mehr. Einmal eingeführt, lässt sich so was nie wieder abschaffen, das ist wie mit dem Soli.

   Then Markkleeberg will soon have tradesmen and no orders. Once it's been introduced, a thing like that can never be abolished again, it's like the 'temporary' solidarity surcharge.

   Although you show us yourself how well it works. On Fridays from eleven your diary says 'Site meeting, Cospudener See', and your sailing boat is called 'Construction Phase 3'.

   That's drumming up business, Ms Hähnel: half of Leipzig's architects sail out there. On the building sites it stays at five days all the same.

   Dann fangen wir kleiner an: sechs Monate Probelauf, nur in der Abteilung Innenausbau. Trockenbauer und Fliesenleger hängen weder am Wetter noch am Tageslicht.

   Then let's start smaller: a six-month trial, only in the interior finishing department. Drywallers and tilers depend neither on the weather nor on daylight.

   Der Betriebsrat nimmt sich der Auswertung selbst an: Krankentage, Termintreue, Überstunden. Und platzt auch nur ein Übergabetermin, beerdigen wir die Idee eigenhändig.

   The works council will take on the evaluation itself: sick days, deadlines kept, overtime. And if even one handover date falls through, we'll bury the idea with our own hands.

    Six months, one department. That still needs the approval of the head of interior finishing, though, and I'll be sitting at the kitchen table with her tonight.
