   Guten Tag, Leander Voigt, wir hatten wegen der Kant-Ausgabe meines verstorbenen Onkels telefoniert. Zwölf Bände, und im Netz werden dafür bis zu dreihundert Euro verlangt.

   Hello, I'm Leander Voigt, we spoke on the phone about my late uncle's Kant edition. Twelve volumes, and online people are asking up to three hundred euros for a set like this.

   Verlangt wird im Netz vieles, Herr Voigt, bezahlt wird weniger. Oh, da hat aber jemand mit dem Bleistift gelesen, und zwar gründlich.

   People ask for all sorts of things online, Mr Voigt; what they pay is less. Oh, someone's read these with a pencil in hand, and thoroughly.

   Mein Onkel war Chemiker bei Merck und hat im Ruhestand jeden Abend zehn Seiten Kant gelesen. Das kann man doch wegradieren, oder?

   My uncle was a chemist at Merck, and after he retired he read ten pages of Kant every evening. You can rub that out, can't you?

   Bloß nicht! Hier, am Rand der „Kritik der reinen Vernunft“: „Unsinn, Kant hat nie titriert.“ Ihr Onkel hat mit dem Alten gestritten wie mit einem Laborkollegen.

   Don't you dare! Here, in the margin of the Critique of Pure Reason: 'Nonsense, Kant never did a titration.' Your uncle argued with the old man as if he were a colleague from the lab.

   Das klingt nach ihm, er hat mit jedem gestritten. Aber was heißt das jetzt für den Preis?

   That sounds like him, he argued with everybody. But what does that mean for the price?

   Kant unterscheidet Preis und Würde: Was einen Preis hat, ist ersetzbar, was Würde hat, nicht. Ihr Onkel hat die Bände unersetzlich gemacht, und genau das drückt den Preis.

   Kant distinguishes between price and dignity: what has a price can be replaced, what has dignity cannot. Your uncle made these volumes irreplaceable, and that's exactly what brings the price down.

   So he's being punished for reading? Then a book is worth all the less, the better it's been understood.

   Not by me, by the market. If Kant saw this, he'd probably recommend a fourth one, the Critique of Pure Market Logic. Until then, I'm offering you a hundred and twenty euros.

    Sold one by one, they might bring me forty euros more, I admit. But the twelve will stay together until someone wants to carry on the argument with your uncle, I promise.

    Agreed, I'll ring you. And if nobody turns up, the edition wouldn't look bad at all behind my till: I happen to enjoy an argument too.
