Day 52: A Trial Shift Scooping Ice Cream

In an ice cream parlour in Lindau on Lake Constance, Frieda (A), a seventeen-year-old pupil, asks Timo (B), the young manager, about a summer job.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Guten Tag, ich komme wegen des Aushangs: Suchen Sie noch jemanden für die Sommerferien?

    Hello, I'm here about the notice: are you still looking for someone for the summer holidays?

    Welche Erfahrung haben Sie denn in der Gastronomie? Jetzt im August reicht die Schlange hier bis zum Hafen.

    So what experience have you got in hospitality? Now in August the queue here stretches all the way to the harbour.

    Ehrlich gesagt keine. Aber beim Schulfest habe ich drei Stunden Eis verkauft, ohne eine einzige Kugel fallen zu lassen.

    None, to be honest. But at the school fête I sold ice cream for three hours without dropping a single scoop.

    Ein Schulfest ist nichts gegen den Ansturm hier. Samstags verkaufen wir über tausend Kugeln, ohne einmal durchzuatmen.

    A school fête is nothing compared to the rush here. On Saturdays we sell over a thousand scoops without once stopping to catch our breath.

    Dann geben Sie mir doch eine Probeschicht am vollsten Samstag der Saison. Da sehen Sie gleich, wie belastbar ich bin.

    Then give me a trial shift on the busiest Saturday of the season. That way you'll see straight away how well I cope under pressure.

    Das wäre dieser Samstag. Ab zehn, zum vollen Stundenlohn, es sei denn, Sie essen mehr Eis, als Sie verkaufen.

    That would be this Saturday. From ten, at the full hourly rate, unless you eat more ice cream than you sell.

    Abgemacht! Nur zur Sicherheit: Wie viele Kugeln darf man essen, ohne dass es auffällt?

    Deal! Just to be on the safe side: how many scoops can you eat without anyone noticing?
