Day 44: Grandad Moving In Downstairs
Over dinner in Schwerin, Anke (A) and her husband Dirk (B) talk about her elderly father's future, while their daughter Ida (C) listens.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.

Dad can't manage the stairs any more, Dirk. He ought to move in with us before he has a fall.

Fine by me, but the only room downstairs is Ida's, and the bathroom would have to be converted.

His care insurance pays towards a walk-in shower. The only question is where Ida would sleep.

Grandad can have my room! I'll move up to the attic, I've always wanted to anyway.

Der Dachboden ist doch nur ein Abstellraum, Ida. Da müsste erst gedämmt und ein richtiger Boden verlegt werden.
The attic's just a junk room, Ida. It would have to be insulated and have a proper floor put down first.

Aber oben sieht man durchs Dachfenster die Sterne! Alles, was dann noch fehlt, ist ein Teleskop.
But up there you can see the stars through the skylight! All that's missing then is a telescope.

Daher weht also der Wind. Ein Teleskop ist allerdings das Günstigste, worüber wir heute Abend geredet haben.
So that's what this is about. Admittedly, a telescope is the cheapest thing we've talked about all evening.
