Day 128: Seven Thousand Steps Are Enough?
Jogging along the Rhine in Basel, Isabell (A) tells her close friend Merve (B), a sports science student, about a study she has read.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

Merve, mach mal langsamer.
Merve, slow down a bit. According to a big study, 7,000 steps a day are enough, so I can give up jogging.

That sounds more like laziness than science. What exactly do the researchers say, or have you only seen the headline?
-
A
The researchers write that people who walk 7,000 steps a day have an almost fifty per cent lower risk of dying than someone who walks 2,000.
-
B
Leute mit 2.000 Schritten kommen ja kaum vom Sofa hoch, da bringt jeder Spaziergang was. Und Korrelation ist noch lange keine Kausalität.
People on 2,000 steps barely get up off the sofa, so any walk does them good. And correlation still isn't causation.

A
Still, it says that above 7,000 steps the extra benefit gets much smaller. And the famous 10,000 supposedly come from a Japanese advertising campaign.
-
B
The Japan bit is true. But most of the people in the studies were a lot older than us, and the older you are, the fewer steps you need for the same effect.
-
A
So what does that mean for me? I'm twenty-five and I want to stay healthy, not run marathons.
-
B
That the study doesn't say much about you. Besides, you sit in an office all day: a good part of your 7,000 steps comes from this very run.

The longer I listen to you, the flimsier my excuse gets. All right then, as far as the Dreirosen Bridge, but not a metre further.
