Day 94: Grandma's Maultaschen in Swabian

In a kitchen in Reutlingen, Gottfried (A) watches his grandson Jasper (B), who is visiting from Hamburg, cook Maultaschen from his late wife's handwritten recipe.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.

    Well, Jasper, are you getting on all right with Grandma's recipe?

    Ich verzweifle gleich. Was sind „Weckle“, und wie viel ist „a Hampfele“?

    I'm about to give up. What are 'Weckle', and how much is 'a Hampfele'?

    „Weckle“ sind Brötchen, „a Hampfele“ ist eine Handvoll. Deine Oma hat geschrieben, wie sie geredet hat.

    'Weckle' are bread rolls, and 'a Hampfele' is a handful. Your grandma wrote the way she talked.

    Und während ihr Schwaben Weckle sagt, heißt das in Hamburg Rundstück. Wer soll das denn verstehen?

    And while you Swabians say Weckle, in Hamburg they're called Rundstück. How is anyone meant to understand that?

    Da hast du recht. Ich hätte ihre Rezepte schon vor Jahren auf Hochdeutsch abtippen sollen.

    You're right. I should have typed up her recipes in standard German years ago.

    Dann machen wir das eben jetzt zusammen. A Hampfele Schwäbisch kann ich ja schon.

    Then we'll just do it together now. I already know a Hampfele of Swabian, after all.
