Day 80: School Until Four O'Clock

At home in Zwickau, Lotte (A), who is in year five, has read a letter from her school and asks her mother Maike (B) about it.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Mama, stimmt das? Nächstes Jahr haben wir jeden Tag bis vier Schule!

    Mum, is it true? Next year we'll have school every day until four!

    Ja, die Schule hat die Entscheidung getroffen. Das wird eine Umstellung, aber dafür gibt's mittags warmes Essen und nachmittags Kurse.

    Yes, the school has made its decision. It'll take some getting used to, but there'll be a hot lunch, and clubs in the afternoon.

    Bis vier? Und wann soll ich dann meine Hausaufgaben machen, abends um acht?

    Until four? So when am I supposed to do my homework, at eight in the evening?

    Gar nicht, hier steht: „Die Hausaufgaben sind in der Schule zu erledigen.“

    You won't need to. It says here: 'Homework is to be done at school.'

    Nie mehr Hausaufgaben zu Hause? Und was für Kurse gibt es?

    No more homework at home, ever? And what sort of clubs are there?

    Zur Wahl stehen Chor, Theater, Robotik und Fußball. Zwei darfst du dir aussuchen.

    You can choose from choir, drama, robotics and football. You get to pick two.

    Robotik und Fußball! Wenn's dann noch Pizza gibt, bleib ich sogar bis fünf.

    Robotics and football! If there's pizza as well, I'll even stay until five.
