Day 74: A Borussia Flag on the Balcony

In a block of flats in Mönchengladbach, Antje Wendt (A), a Borussia fan, asks her landlord, Detlef Kaminski (B), for permission before Saturday's derby against Cologne.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.

    Mr Kaminski, may I hang the flag my father left me from my balcony for the derby?

    Ausgerechnet zum Derby gegen Köln? Lassen Sie mich erst mal in die Hausordnung schauen.

    For the Cologne game, of all things? Let me have a look at the house rules first.

    Sie sind doch nicht etwa FC-Fan? Das würde Ihre Blicke auf mein Trikot erklären.

    You're not a Cologne fan, are you? That would explain the looks you give my shirt.

    Seit vierzig Jahren. Aber eine Regel, die Fahnen verbietet, finde ich hier leider nicht.

    Also darf ich? Die ist allerdings drei Meter lang.

    So I can? It's three metres long, mind you.

    Meinetwegen, solange sie nicht vor meinem Küchenfenster baumelt. Beim Frühstück will ich kein Borussia-Wappen sehen.

    Fine by me, as long as it doesn't dangle in front of my kitchen window. I don't want to look at a Borussia crest over breakfast.
