Day 7: The Pool Closes for Two Years

Over breakfast in Rostock, Katrin (A) reads the local paper and tells her husband Torsten (B) some news about his swimming pool.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Hör mal, die Schwimmhalle, in der du morgens schwimmst, schließt für zwei Jahre.

    Listen to this: the pool you swim in every morning is closing for two years.

    Was? Obwohl sie erst vor zehn Jahren renoviert wurde?

    What? Even though it was only renovated ten years ago?

    Angeblich ist das Dach undicht, und die Renovierung dauert bis 2028.

    Apparently the roof leaks, and the renovation will last until 2028.

    Na toll. Und wo soll ich jetzt schwimmen, in der Badewanne?

    Oh, great. So where am I supposed to swim now, in the bath?

    Warte, hier steht was über einen Verein, der den ganzen Winter in der Ostsee schwimmt.

    Hang on, it says something here about a club that swims in the Baltic all winter.

    Die Eisbader, über die du immer lachst? Na ja, ausprobieren wollte ich das eigentlich schon lange.

    The ice swimmers you always laugh at? Well, I've actually been wanting to try it for ages.
