Day 54: The Menu Is a QR Code

At a restaurant in Potsdam, Kilian (A) and his girlfriend (B) want to order, but there is no menu on the table, so they turn to the owner, Holger Fiedler (C).

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    I can't, my battery's dead. And the page won't load on yours either.

    Entschuldigung, wir würden gern bestellen. Haben Sie vielleicht noch eine Karte aus Papier?

    Excuse me, we'd like to order. Have you got a paper menu, by any chance?

    Die Papierkarten sind leider abgeschafft. Ihr Tisch ist schon registriert, Sie bestellen einfach per Handy.

    The paper menus have been scrapped, I'm afraid. Your table's already registered; you just order by phone.

    Und was machen Gäste ohne Handy? Mit leerem Akku ist man hier ja völlig aufgeschmissen.

    And what about guests without a phone? With a dead battery, you're completely stuck here.

    Unter uns: Ich hasse das System, seit wir es haben. Ich hole Ihnen eine alte Karte.

    Between you and me, I've hated the system ever since we got it. I'll get you an old menu.
