Day 53: Shoes for a First Half-Marathon

In a running shop in Frankfurt, Lennart (A), a young man training for his first half-marathon, asks the shop assistant, Tanja (B), for the most expensive pair of shoes.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.

    I'm running my first half-marathon soon. I'd like that pair up there.

    Die Carbonschuhe für 260 Euro? Lassen Sie mich erst mal sehen, wie Sie laufen.

    The carbon ones for 260 euros? Let me see how you run first.

    Muss das sein? Ich dachte immer, je teurer der Schuh, desto schneller der Läufer.

    Is that really necessary? I always thought the pricier the shoe, the faster the runner.

    Auf dem Laufband knickt Ihr Fuß deutlich nach innen. Je länger die Strecke, desto größer die Belastung.

    On the treadmill your foot clearly rolls inwards. The longer the distance, the greater the strain.

    Und der teure Schuh? Lohnt sich die Investition denn nicht?

    And the expensive shoe? Isn't it worth the investment?

    Für Sie leider nicht. Der Stabilschuh hier passt besser und kostet nur 140 Euro.

    Not for you, I'm afraid. This stability shoe suits you better, and it's only 140 euros.
