Day 51: A Two in Maths

At home in Augsburg, Ida (A), who is in her last year of primary school, shows her mother Veronika (B) her new maths grade: this year's grades decide who can go to grammar school, the Gymnasium.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Mama, ich hab in Mathe nur eine Zwei. Das Gymnasium kann ich vergessen!

    Mum, I only got a two in maths. I can forget about grammar school!

    Eine Zwei ist doch toll! Wer setzt dich denn so unter Druck?

    A two is great! Who's putting you under so much pressure?

    Keiner. Aber wenn ich in Mathe besser wäre, könnte ich mit Emma aufs Gymnasium.

    Nobody. But if I was better at maths, I could go to grammar school with Emma.

    Mit deinem Schnitt kommt das Gymnasium trotzdem infrage. Und die Entscheidung treffen wir gemeinsam.

    With your average, grammar school is still an option. And we'll make the decision together.

    Und wenn es doch nicht reicht?

    And what if it's not enough after all?

    Dann wechselst du eben später. Ich war auch erst auf der Realschule, und rate mal, wo ich heute unterrichte.

    Then you'll just switch schools later. I started out at a Realschule too, and guess where I teach now.
