Day 45: University Without the Abitur

In Magdeburg, Nicole (A), who trained as a hairdresser after the Realschule and is now a master hairdresser, tells her older sister Simone (B) about a plan she thinks has come too late.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Hätte ich damals bloß Abitur gemacht! Dann könnte ich jetzt studieren.

    If only I'd done my Abitur back then! Then I could go to university now.

    Studieren? Ich dachte, du bist glücklich in deinem Salon.

    University? I thought you were happy at your salon.

    Bin ich auch, aber um Berufsschullehrerin zu werden, brauche ich ein Studium.

    I am, but to become a vocational school teacher, I need a degree.

    Warte mal, hier steht's: Mit deinem Meisterbrief kannst du direkt an die Uni.

    Hang on, it says here: with your master craftsman's certificate, you can go straight to university.

    Echt jetzt? Ich hab mich gestern schon für die Abendschule angemeldet!

    Seriously? I already signed up for night school yesterday!

    Hättest du mich mal vorher gefragt! Die Abendschule kannst du dir jetzt sparen.

    You should have asked me first! You can forget about night school now.
