Day 44: Rehearsing the Pay Talk

The evening before her salary review in Darmstadt, Melanie (A) asks her boyfriend Vincent (B) to help her rehearse.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    You're playing my boss now, OK? And please don't laugh.

    Right, totally serious. So what's this about?

    Nach Abschluss des Projekts möchte ich einen Vorschlag zur Anpassung meines Gehalts machen.

    Following the completion of the project, I'd like to put forward a proposal for an adjustment to my salary.

    Aber gern, mehr Geld für alle! Da ist die Entscheidung schnell getroffen.

    Of course, more money for everyone! That's an easy decision to make.

    Viel zu leicht! Frau Lorenz würde sagen, eine Erhöhung komme derzeit nicht infrage.

    Far too easy! Mrs Lorenz would say a pay rise is out of the question at present.

    Na gut, noch mal. Dafür stehen im Moment leider keine Mittel zur Verfügung.
