Day 176: Spreewald Gherkins Go Online

In a village in the Spreewald, Irina (A), who works in marketing, has an idea for her mother-in-law Heidrun (B), whose pickled gherkins are famous in the village.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Despite the rain, your gherkins were gone within an hour at the church bazaar. They've got to go online!

    Kind, weißt du, was das für ein Aufwand ist? Nach dem Basar tat mir tagelang der Rücken weh.

    Oh, love, do you know how much work that is? After the bazaar my back hurt for days.

    Du müsstest ja nicht alles allein machen. Um die Website und den Versand kümmere ich mich.

    You wouldn't have to do it all yourself. I'll take care of the website and the shipping.

    Und wer steht während der Saison abends am Herd? Die Gurken legen sich ja nicht von allein ein.

    And who stands at the stove in the evenings during the season? The gherkins don't pickle themselves, you know.

    Wir fangen klein an, und dein Rezept bleibt geheim. Wenn's dir zu viel wird, hören wir auf.

    We'll start small, and your recipe stays secret. If it gets too much for you, we'll stop.

    Wenn ich zwanzig Jahre jünger wäre, würde ich sofort Ja sagen. So müsste ich erst meinen Rücken fragen.

    If I were twenty years younger, I'd say yes straight away. As it is, I'd have to ask my back first.
