Day 157: The Third Doctor in the Family

At a GP's surgery in Hildesheim, Milena Rademacher (A), a medical student who has had headaches for weeks, sees Dr Clemens Meinecke (B).

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.

    Ich habe seit Semesterbeginn fast täglich Kopfschmerzen, und Ibuprofen hilft kaum noch.

    I've had headaches almost every day since the start of term, and ibuprofen hardly helps any more.

    Blutdruck und Puls sind völlig normal, Frau Rademacher. Gibt es etwas, was Sie gerade besonders belastet?

    Your blood pressure and pulse are completely normal, Ms Rademacher. Is there anything that's weighing on you particularly heavily at the moment?

    Das Studium ist nicht das Problem, sondern alles, was meine Eltern danach von mir erwarten.

    My studies aren't the problem. It's everything my parents expect of me afterwards.

    Sie sind nicht zufällig die Tochter vom Kollegen Rademacher in der Innenstadt? Dann kann ich mir denken, worum es geht.

    You're not Dr Rademacher's daughter, by any chance, from the practice in the town centre? Then I can guess what this is about.

    Ja, ich soll die Praxis in dritter Generation übernehmen. Dabei will ich eigentlich Kinderärztin werden.

    Yes, I'm supposed to take over the practice as the third generation. But what I actually want is to be a paediatrician.

    Das kenne ich: Bei mir war es die Zahnarztpraxis meines Vaters. Den Druck bin ich nur losgeworden, indem ich irgendwann Klartext mit ihm geredet habe.

    I know how that feels: in my case it was my father's dental practice. The only way I got rid of the pressure was by eventually being straight with him.

    Verstehe. Sie verschreiben mir also statt Ibuprofen ein ehrliches Gespräch mit meinem Vater?

    I see. So instead of ibuprofen, you're prescribing me an honest talk with my father?
