Day 140: Work and Travel After the Abitur

At a work-and-travel agency in Nuremberg, Esra (A), a seventeen-year-old in her last year at school, asks Samuel (B), a young adviser, about going to New Zealand.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.

    Hello, I'm taking my Abitur in the summer and want to go to New Zealand afterwards. Is that possible?

    Grundsätzlich ja, aber es hängt davon ab, ob Sie zum Zeitpunkt des Antrags achtzehn sind.

    In principle, yes, but it depends on whether you're eighteen at the time you apply.

    Ich hab aber eine Klasse übersprungen, achtzehn werde ich erst im September.

    But I skipped a year, so I won't turn eighteen until September.

    Kein Problem, im Oktober beginnt dort sowieso der Frühling. Achten Sie nur darauf, dass Sie bis dahin genug sparen.

    No problem, spring starts there in October anyway. Just make sure you save enough by then.

    Meine Eltern meinen, das sei nur ein teurer Urlaub. Was kostet das denn so?

    My parents say it's just an expensive holiday. So what does it cost, roughly?

    Allein der Flug kostet gut 1.500 Euro. Dafür verdienen Sie dort auch Geld, ich hab damals Kiwis gepflückt.

    The flight alone costs a good 1,500 euros. But you earn money there too: I picked kiwis back then.

    Kiwis? Das erzähle ich meinen Eltern, die sehen mich nämlich schon am Strand liegen.

    Kiwis? I'm telling my parents that: they can already picture me lying on a beach.
