Day 137: The Lemonade Company

At home in Augsburg, Verena (A) and Adrian (B), who both work for start-ups, hear out their daughter Maja (C), who wants to start a lemonade company and sell at the local market.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.

    So, Maja, Papa und ich sind jetzt Investoren. Warum sollten wir in deine Limonadenfirma investieren?

    Right, Maja, Dad and I are investors now. Why should we invest in your lemonade company?

    Aber bitte mit Zahlen. Schöne Geschichten hören wir bei der Arbeit jeden Tag.

    But with figures, please. We hear nice stories at work every day.

    Zahlen? Beim Schulfest war nach einer Stunde alles weg, obwohl ich zehn Liter gemacht hatte!

    Figures? At the school fair everything was gone within an hour, even though I'd made ten litres!

    Nicht schlecht. Und was blieb unterm Strich übrig, nachdem du Zitronen und Zucker bezahlt hattest?

    Not bad. And what was the bottom line once you'd paid for the lemons and sugar?

    Zweiundvierzig Euro Gewinn! Die Zitronen hatte mir Oma nämlich geschenkt.

    Forty-two euros profit! Grandma had given me the lemons, you see.

    Also subventioniert Oma deine Firma. Und falls es am Markttag regnet, was machst du dann?

    So Grandma's subsidising your company. And if it rains on market day, what will you do then?

  7. C

    Dann verkaufe ich heißen Tee mit Zitrone. Die Zitronen spendiert Oma wieder, das hab ich schon mit ihr geklärt.

    Then I'll sell hot tea with lemon. Grandma's paying for the lemons again, I've already sorted that out with her.
