Day 136: Rejected Before Lunch

In her flat in Düsseldorf, Natalia (B), who is applying for jobs, is visited by her close friend Derya (A).

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Was ist los? Du starrst seit fünf Minuten auf dein Handy.

    What's up? You've been staring at your phone for five minutes.

    Hör dir das an: „Leider haben wir uns für andere Bewerber entschieden“, und zwar elf Minuten nach dem Abschicken!

    Listen to this: 'Unfortunately, we have decided in favour of other applicants', and that's eleven minutes after I sent it!

    Elf Minuten? Das hat bestimmt kein Mensch gelesen, das wird ein Programm aussortiert haben.

    Eleven minutes? I bet no human even read it: a program will have weeded it out.

    Tja, geschrieben hat's auch kein Mensch. Das Anschreiben stammt komplett von einer KI.

    Well, no human wrote it either. The cover letter came entirely from an AI.

    Dann haben sich eben zwei Programme unterhalten. Die werden hundert solche Anschreiben bekommen haben.

    So two programs just had a chat, then. They'll have had a hundred cover letters like that.

    Ich hätte wenigstens den ersten Absatz selbst schreiben sollen. Der fängt nämlich mit „Gern! Hier ist dein Anschreiben“ an.

    I should at least have written the first paragraph myself. It starts with 'Sure! Here's your cover letter'.
