Day 13: Forty Minutes for a Schnitzel

In a busy brewery pub in Düsseldorf's old town, Laura (A), a customer, waves over Tim (B), her waiter.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Entschuldigung, ich warte seit vierzig Minuten auf mein Schnitzel. Ist was schiefgelaufen?

    Excuse me, I've been waiting forty minutes for my schnitzel. Has something gone wrong?

  2. B

    Es ist mir peinlich, das zuzugeben: Unser neues Tablet hat Ihre Bestellung verschluckt.

    I'm embarrassed to admit it: our new tablet has swallowed your order.

  3. A

    Ach, so was passiert. Sind die Tablets neu?

    Oh, these things happen. Are the tablets new?

  4. B

    Seit Montag, und seitdem streiten sich Küche und Service. Jede Bestellung muss zweimal eingegeben werden.

    Since Monday, and the kitchen and the waiters have been arguing ever since. Every order has to be entered twice.

  5. A

    Da ist es bestimmt schwer, freundlich zu bleiben. Ich habe es nicht eilig.

    It must be hard to stay friendly with all that. I'm in no hurry.

  6. B

    Sie sind heute die Erste, die nicht schimpft. Das nächste Altbier geht aufs Haus.

    You're the first person today who hasn't told me off. Your next Altbier's on the house.
