Day 203: Shorter Reports, Please

At a publishing house in Bayreuth, Karola Brandt (A), head of department, has a word with Selin Aydin (B), a new colleague, about her weekly reports.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Frau Aydin, hätten Sie kurz Zeit? Es geht um Ihren Wochenbericht.

    Ms Aydin, have you got a moment? It's about your weekly report.

    Natürlich. Stimmt damit etwas nicht?

    Of course. Is something wrong with it?

    Er ist sehr gründlich, keine Frage. Aber vier Seiten sind halt ziemlich viel.

    It's very thorough, no question. But four pages is rather a lot.

    Mein alter Chef wollte jedes Detail wissen. Lieber zu viel als zu wenig, dachte ich.

    My old boss wanted to know every detail. Better too much than too little, I thought.

    Könnten Sie mir freitags nur eine Zusammenfassung schicken? Eine Seite wäre mir lieber als vier.

    Could you just send me a summary on Fridays? I'd rather have one page than four.

    Gern. Und falls Ihnen mal ein Detail fehlt, habe ich ja noch drei Seiten.
