Day 190: Advice from a Retired Nurse

In a care home in Koblenz, Jannis (A), a young volunteer who reads to the residents, asks Marga Theisen (B), a retired nurse who lives there, for advice.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Frau Theisen, darf ich Sie mal was fragen? Sie waren doch Krankenschwester.

    Mrs Theisen, may I ask you something? You were a nurse, weren't you?

    Vierzig Jahre lang. Wieso, wollen Sie auch in die Pflege?

    For forty years. Why, do you want to go into nursing too?

    Vielleicht. Ich weiß nur nicht, ob ich Medizin studieren oder Krankenpfleger werden soll.

    Maybe. I just don't know whether I should study medicine or become a nurse.

    Ich fing mit neunzehn auf einer Kinderstation an. Wegen der Nachtdienste schlief ich damals kaum.

    I started on a children's ward at nineteen. Because of the night shifts, I hardly slept back then.

    Und trotz der Nachtdienste sind Sie vierzig Jahre geblieben?

    And you stayed forty years in spite of the night shifts?

  6. B

    Wegen der Kinder, ja. Machen Sie doch erst mal ein Praktikum auf einer Station.

    Because of the children, yes. Why don't you do a placement on a ward first?
