Day 184: No Desk of Her Own

In Gotha, Jutta (A), who has worked at the same insurance office for twenty-five years, tells her grown-up daughter Lotta (B) about a change at work.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Stell dir vor, ich habe keinen eigenen Schreibtisch mehr. Nach fünfundzwanzig Jahren in der Abteilung!

    Imagine, I haven't got a desk of my own any more. After twenty-five years in the department!

    Macht ihr jetzt auch Desksharing? Daran gewöhnst du dich schnell.

    Are you doing desk sharing now too? You'll soon get used to it.

    Das Büro ist zwar hell, aber morgens muss ich erst einen Platz suchen.

    The office is bright, I'll give it that, but in the morning I have to find a seat first.

    Du bist doch nicht jeden Tag im Büro, sondern nur dreimal die Woche.

    But you're not in the office every day, only three times a week.

    Und abends darf weder ein Foto noch mein Kaktus stehen bleiben.

    And in the evening, neither a photo nor my cactus can stay on the desk.

  6. B

    Dann nimm ihn doch mit nach Hause. Da hat er einen eigenen Schreibtisch.

    Then take it home with you. It'll have a desk of its own there.
