Day 178: Stood Up for the Third Time

In a bar in Krefeld, Guido (A), a man at the next table, speaks to Ilias (B), a young man who has been sitting on his own for an hour.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Entschuldigung, Sie warten schon eine Stunde. Kommt da noch jemand?

    Excuse me, you've been waiting for an hour. Is someone still coming?

    Nein, mein Kumpel hat abgesagt, zum dritten Mal. Und sein Bier steht schon da!

    No, my mate's cancelled, for the third time. And his beer's already on the table!

    Oje, zum dritten Mal? Hat er denn einen Grund genannt?

    Oh dear, the third time? Did he give a reason?

    Angeblich wegen der Arbeit. Aber ich glaube, eher wegen unseres Streits.

    Supposedly because of work. But I think it's more because of our argument.

    Es ist nicht leicht, so was anzusprechen. Aber versuchen Sie doch, ehrlich mit ihm zu reden.

    It isn't easy to bring something like that up. But why not try talking to him honestly?

  6. B

    Okay, ich rufe ihn morgen an. Aber sein Bier trinke ich jetzt selbst.

    OK, I'll ring him tomorrow. But I'm drinking his beer myself now.
