   Noch mal von vorn: Ich lade als Nachbarin zum Dreißigsten ein, du antwortest als Sachbearbeiterin. Nach jeder Pointe Pause, da kommt der Tusch.

   Once more from the top: I'm the neighbour inviting you to my thirtieth, you reply as the official. Pause after every punchline, that's where the fanfare comes.

   'Dear Madam Neighbour, I hereby confirm receipt of your invitation within the prescribed period. In this regard, the following decision is issued.'

   Genau dieser Ton, perfekt. Jetzt ich: „Ach, sei doch nicht so förmlich! Es gibt Sekt und Kuchen, und bring gern jemanden mit.“

   That's exactly the tone, perfect. Now me: 'Oh, don't be so formal! There'll be fizz and cake, and feel free to bring someone.'

   'Bringing a companion requires a separate application; a form is enclosed. I further assume that each guest will be allocated one piece of cake, second helpings only upon informal application.'

   „Nachschlag nur auf formlosen Antrag“, ich kann nicht mehr! Wie kommst du bloß auf so was, das ist doch maßlos überzeichnet.

   'Second helpings only upon informal application', I can't take any more! How on earth do you come up with this stuff? It's wildly over the top.

   Überzeichnet? Das steht fast wörtlich in meinem Schreiben vom Dienstag, da ging's um die Sondernutzungserlaubnis für einen Kuchenstand beim Straßenfest.

   Over the top? That's almost word for word from my letter on Tuesday, about the special-use permit for a cake stall at a street party.

   Gut die Hälfte, der Rest ist frei nach meiner Chefin. Die unterschreibt so was im Minutentakt und hält es für bürgerfreundlich.

   A good half, the rest is loosely based on my boss. She signs that sort of thing every other minute and thinks it's user-friendly.
