   Valerie, hab ich was Falsches gesagt? Ich hab bloß einen Kaffee bestellt, und der Kellner hat mich nur eisig angeschaut.

   Valerie, did I say something wrong? I only asked for a coffee, and the waiter just gave me an icy look.

   Erstens ist das ein Ober, kein Kellner. Und „einen Kaffee“ bestellt hier keiner, das ist, als würdest du beim Metzger „Wurst“ verlangen.

   Firstly, he's an Ober, a proper Viennese waiter, not a Kellner. And nobody here orders 'a coffee': that's like going into a butcher's and asking for 'sausage'.

   Was hätte ich denn sagen sollen? Bei der Hälfte der Karte weiß ich nicht mal, ob man das trinkt oder isst.

   What should I have said, then? With half the menu I don't even know whether you drink it or eat it.

   Dafür bedarf es keines Studiums: Melange mit Milchschaum, Einspänner im Glas mit Schlagobers, und der Verlängerte ist das, was ihr Kaffee nennt.

   It doesn't take a degree: a Melange comes with frothed milk, an Einspänner in a glass with Schlagobers, whipped cream, and a Verlängerter is what you lot call coffee.

   Keine Sorge, der Grant gehört zum Service. Ein echter Wiener Ober rühmt sich seines Grants wie ein Sternekoch seiner Sterne.

   Don't worry, the Grant, the grumpiness, is part of the service. A real Viennese waiter prides himself on his Grant the way a top chef does on his Michelin stars.

   Bezüglich des Trinkgelds gilt dasselbe wie bei euch: Du rundest beim Zahlen auf. Nur sagt man hier eher „Passt so“ als „Stimmt so“.

   When it comes to the tip, it's the same as at home: you round up when you pay. Only here people tend to say 'Passt so' rather than 'Stimmt so'.

    For twenty-six years, to be exact: he's my uncle. He brought out his best grumpiness especially for your visit.
