   Das Urteil ist ein Witz. Sechzig Tagessätze für einen mitten in der Blüte gefällten Birnbaum, da ist der Kögel billig davongekommen.

   That verdict's a joke. A fine of sixty days' income for a pear tree cut down in full blossom: Kögel got off lightly.

   Billig? Er hat einen vom Feuerbrand befallenen Baum beseitigt, bevor der auch seine Apfelbäume anstecken konnte.

   Lightly? He got rid of a tree infected with fire blight before it could spread to his apple trees too.

   Das behauptet er. Nur hat der vom Gericht bestellte Gutachter auf den Fotos keine Spur von Feuerbrand gefunden.

   So he claims. But the court-appointed expert found no trace of fire blight in the photos.

   Fotos! Darauf erkennt doch kein Mensch Feuerbrand. Und die im Zeugenstand schluchzende Frau Wiedemann war reines Theater.

   Photos! Nobody can spot fire blight in those. And Mrs Wiedemann sobbing in the witness box was pure theatre.

   She planted that tree for her wedding fifty years ago. She's allowed a sob over that.

   Even so, the judge could have dropped the case in return for a payment, like in the garden gnome trial last month. Kögel is seventy-eight and has no previous convictions!

   Since when have you been so lenient? Last week you wanted to drive a bike thief to Gablingen prison yourself. Do you know Kögel, by any chance?

   Also gut, ja. Er singt mit mir im Kirchenchor von St. Ulrich, und jeden Herbst hat er mir ein Körbchen makelloser Williams-Christ-Birnen geschenkt.

   All right, yes. He sings with me in the church choir at St Ulrich's, and every autumn he's given me a little basket of flawless Williams pears.

   Pears? Not from the tree that hung over his fence, surely? Then you're biased, my dear, and quite possibly a receiver of stolen goods.

    A receiver of stolen goods, honestly! Under section 911 of the Civil Code, whatever falls from a tree onto the neighbouring land belongs to the neighbour: we learnt that in the walnut case.
