Day 55: Your Cappuccino Is Being Processed

In a café in Potsdam's Dutch Quarter, Saskia (A), a civil servant at a federal ministry, calls over the waiter, Luca (B), a law student, because her cappuccino still hasn't come.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.

    Excuse me, I ordered a cappuccino twenty minutes ago. Do I have to submit an application first, or is it still coming?

    Bezüglich Ihrer Bestellung darf ich Ihnen mitteilen, dass sich der Vorgang in Bearbeitung befindet. Infolge eines Engpasses an der Siebträgermaschine kommt es derzeit zu Wartezeiten.

    With regard to your order, I can inform you that the matter is being processed. Owing to a bottleneck at the espresso machine, there are currently delays.

    Aha. Dann hätte ich gern das Aktenzeichen, damit meine Beschwerde ordnungsgemäß zugeordnet werden kann.

    I see. Then I'd like the reference number, so that my complaint can be filed properly.

    Tisch sieben, Vorgang zwei. Fristgerecht eingegangen, wird Ihre Bestellung in der Reihenfolge des Eingangs bearbeitet, und vor Ihnen ist noch eine Reisegruppe aus Sachsen dran.

    Table seven, item two. Having been received within the time limit, your order will be processed in order of receipt, and there's still a coach party from Saxony ahead of you.

    Glück für Sie, dass ich vom Fach bin: Im Ministerium läge Ihr Cappuccino jetzt drei Referaten zur Mitzeichnung vor und käme lauwarm nach der Sommerpause zurück.

    Lucky for you I'm in the business: at the ministry your cappuccino would now be with three units for sign-off and would come back lukewarm after the summer recess.

    Dann wissen Sie ja, wie zügig wir hier arbeiten. Soeben aufgeschäumt, wartet er nur noch auf die Freigabe der Schichtleitung.

    Then you'll know how swiftly we work here. Freshly frothed, it's now only awaiting approval from the shift manager.

    Freigabe? Angesichts einer Wartezeit von zwanzig Minuten erwäge ich eine Untätigkeitsklage, handschriftlich auf der Serviette.

    Approval? In view of a twenty-minute wait, I'm considering an action for failure to act, handwritten on the napkin.

    Die wäre unzulässig: Nach Paragraf 75 der Verwaltungsgerichtsordnung müssten Sie drei Monate warten. Ich schreibe nächste Woche Klausur, ich weiß so was.

    That would be inadmissible: under section 75 of the Code of Administrative Court Procedure you'd have to wait three months. I've got an exam next week, I know these things.

    Ein angehender Jurist, das erklärt einiges. Dann beantrage ich hilfsweise Schadensersatz, zahlbar in Käsekuchen.

    A budding lawyer, that explains a lot. Then, in the alternative, I claim damages, payable in cheesecake.

    Stattgegeben. Zum Ausgleich der unstreitig überlangen Wartezeit gewährt Ihnen das Haus ein Stück Käsekuchen, kulanzhalber und ohne Anerkennung einer Rechtspflicht.

    Granted. To compensate for the undisputedly excessive wait, the house awards you a piece of cheesecake, as a gesture of goodwill and without acknowledging any legal obligation.

    Vergleich angenommen. Und bewerben Sie sich nach dem Examen bei uns: So schnell hat mir im Ministerium noch keiner etwas bewilligt.

    Settlement accepted. And apply to us once you've qualified: nobody at the ministry has ever granted me anything that fast.
