Day 82: The Weekly Market Must Move?

Sitting outside a café on Erlangen's Marktplatz after a residents' meeting about moving the weekly market held there during two years of building work, Sina (A), a regular at the market, talks it over with her friends Leonard (B), an urban studies student, and Maja (C), who sells cheese there.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Zwei Jahre Markt auf dem Großparkplatz, zwischen Autos und Abgasen? Da kaufe ich lieber gleich im Supermarkt.

    Two years of the market in the big car park, among cars and exhaust fumes? I might as well just go to the supermarket.

    Abwarten, beschlossen ist noch nichts. Bis zur Abstimmung im Oktober wird die Verwaltung die Alternativen durchgerechnet haben.

    Wait and see, nothing's been decided yet. By the vote in October the town hall will have costed the alternatives.

    Durchgerechnet vielleicht, aber uns Händler hat keiner gefragt. Bis dahin werden sich viele von uns längst woanders umgesehen haben.

    Costed, maybe, but nobody asked us stallholders. By then plenty of us will long since have started looking elsewhere.

    Du etwa auch, Maja? Ohne deinen Käsestand wäre mein Samstag nicht mehr derselbe.

    Not you too, Maja? Without your cheese stall my Saturdays wouldn't be the same.

    Ich denke ernsthaft darüber nach. Auf einem Parkplatz ohne Laufkundschaft müsste ich herbe Einbußen hinnehmen, und das bei gleicher Standgebühr.

    I'm seriously thinking about it. In a car park with no passing trade I'd take a real hit, and for the same pitch fee.

    Der Schlossplatz nebenan wäre die Lösung. Aber wenn keiner Druck macht, wird sich der Stadtrat bis dahin auf den Parkplatz festgelegt haben.

    The Schlossplatz next door would be the answer. But if nobody puts the pressure on, the council will have settled on the car park by then.

    Mit einer Unterschriftenliste zum Beispiel. Sina, du bist doch jeden Samstag auf dem Markt und kennst da Gott und die Welt.

    With a petition, for example. Sina, you're at the market every Saturday and you know absolutely everyone there.

    Wer meckert, muss auch anpacken, schon klar. Bis Oktober werde ich den halben Markt zum Unterschreiben überredet haben.

    If you moan, you have to muck in too, I get it. By October I'll have talked half the market into signing.
