Day 68: A DJ's Hearing Test
At a hearing care shop in Ingolstadt, Pascal (A), a young DJ, gets the results of his hearing test from Verena Stadler (B), an audiologist.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.

Do you see the dip at four thousand hertz? It's typical of noise damage, and quite pronounced for your age.

I've been DJing almost every weekend for eight years, mostly without ear protection. Can it be put right?

Leider nicht. Einmal abgestorben, wachsen die Haarzellen im Innenohr nicht nach: Der Schaden ist nicht rückgängig zu machen, wohl aber aufzuhalten.
I'm afraid not. Once they've died, the hair cells in the inner ear don't grow back: the damage can't be undone, but it can be stopped.

And the ringing after long nights? It's usually gone by lunchtime the next day.

Das ist ein Warnsignal. Jahrelang ungeschützt solchen Pegeln ausgesetzt, bekommen viele DJs einen Tinnitus, der bleibt.
That's a warning sign. Exposed to levels like that for years without protection, many DJs end up with tinnitus that never goes away.
