Day 32: The Speed Camera Letter

In Lübeck, Leon (A) shows his friend Jule (B), who borrowed his car not long ago, a letter he has just received.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Post von der Bußgeldstelle: Der Blitzer in der Travemünder Allee hat mein Auto erwischt, 21 km/h zu schnell.

    A letter from the fines office: the speed camera on the Travemünder Allee caught my car doing 21 km/h over the limit.

    Und das hältst du mir unter die Nase? Geliehene Autos fahre ich grundsätzlich übervorsichtig.

    And you're shoving that under my nose? I always drive borrowed cars extra carefully.

    Du hattest den Wagen zuletzt. Du musst Gas gegeben haben, ohne es zu merken.

    You had the car last. You must have put your foot down without noticing.

    So wie ich gefahren bin, hätte mich jeder Radfahrer überholt. Wann soll das gewesen sein?

    The way I was driving, any cyclist could have overtaken me. When is this supposed to have happened?

    Samstag, der zwölfte, kurz vor Mitternacht. Das Foto ist verschwommen, die 115 Euro Bußgeld leider nicht.

    Saturday the twelfth, just before midnight. The photo's blurred, but the 115-euro fine, sadly, isn't.

    Am zwölften hatte doch dein Bruder das Auto, für seinen Umzug. Ich habe also ein Alibi.

    But on the twelfth your brother had the car, for his move. So I've got an alibi.

    Stimmt, Theo und seine Umzugskisten! Entschuldige, dann dürfte gleich jemand anders einen unangenehmen Anruf bekommen.

    Right, Theo and his moving boxes! Sorry. Then I'd say someone else is about to get an unpleasant phone call.
