Day 143: Signing the Cast First
On the playground of a primary school in Paderborn, Fiete (A), who has turned up with his arm in a cast, shows it off to his classmate Talea (B).
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Talea, guck mal, ich habe einen richtigen Gips! Den habe ich gestern im Krankenhaus angelegt bekommen, und die Farbe durfte ich mir sogar aussuchen.
Talea, look, I've got a real cast! I had it put on at the hospital yesterday, and I even got to choose the colour.

Boah, der ist ja knallblau! Wie ist das denn passiert, bist du etwa doch vom Klettergerüst gesprungen?
Wow, it's bright blue! How did that happen, did you jump off the climbing frame after all?

Nicht gesprungen, abgerutscht, und dann bin ich voll auf die Hand gefallen. Im Krankenhaus habe ich sogar das Röntgenbild gezeigt bekommen, da sieht man den Bruch genau.
I didn't jump, I slipped, and then I landed right on my hand. At the hospital they even showed me the X-ray, you can see the break clearly.

Echt, gebrochen? Das hat bestimmt wehgetan, und was hat die Ärztin gesagt?
Really, broken? That must have hurt, and what did the doctor say?

Und wie, ich habe geheult wie ein Schlosshund. Hör mal, was sie für die Schule geschrieben hat: „Infolge eines Sturzes zog sich der Schüler eine Fraktur des linken Handgelenks zu.“
You bet, I cried my eyes out. Listen to what she wrote for school: "As a result of a fall, the pupil sustained a fracture of the left wrist."

Warum redest du denn auf einmal wie ein Nachrichtensprecher? Steht da wenigstens drin, dass du keine Hausaufgaben machen musst?
Why are you suddenly talking like a newsreader? Does it at least say you don't have to do any homework?

Leider nicht, nur das hier: „Hinsichtlich des Sportunterrichts ist der Schüler bis zur Abnahme des Gipses befreit.“ Und den bekomme ich erst in sechs Wochen abgenommen.
Sadly not, just this: "With regard to PE, the pupil is excused until the cast is removed." And I won't get it taken off for another six weeks.
