Day 141: Asleep at the Viennale
Leaving a screening at the Viennale, Vienna's film festival, Jannis (A) and his close friend Emre (B) talk about the slow Austrian film they have just seen on free tickets.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.

Der Anfang war stark, aber die eigentliche Wucht kam doch erst nach der Beerdigung. Oder war dir die Szene mit dem Brief zu kitschig?

Nein, der Brief war sehr berührend. Wobei mir gerade nicht einfällt, wer ihn eigentlich geschrieben hat.

Die Schwester natürlich, das war doch die Pointe! Die Szene kann man nicht übersehen, es sei denn, man hat sie verschlafen.
The sister, of course, that was the big twist! You can't miss that scene, unless you slept through it.

Na gut, ich geb's zu: Irgendwo zwischen dem zweiten Gewitter und der Beerdigung bin ich eingeschlafen. Die Sessel im Gartenbaukino sind aber auch zu bequem.
All right, I admit it: somewhere between the second thunderstorm and the funeral I fell asleep. Mind you, the seats in the Gartenbaukino are too comfortable.

You can't be serious! Your sister gave us those tickets, and she spent an hour in the online queue for them.

Deshalb erfährt sie davon auch nichts. Aber mal ehrlich: Drei Stunden fast ohne Dialog sind nach einer langen Woche eine sportliche Ansage.
Which is why she's never going to hear about it. But honestly: three hours with hardly any dialogue is a tall order after a long week.
