Day 58: Working Between the Years

At an advertising agency in Braunschweig, two colleagues, Timo (A) and Emilia (B), both want the week between Christmas and New Year off.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Have you seen the email? Only one of us can take time off between Christmas and New Year.

    Ja, und letztes Jahr saß ich hier allein, während du in Tirol Ski fuhrst.

    Yes, and last year I sat here on my own while you were skiing in Tyrol.

    Und davor musste ich an Heiligabend für dich einspringen, nachdem du dich krankgemeldet hattest.

    And the year before, I had to stand in for you on Christmas Eve after you'd called in sick.

    Mit Fieber, falls du dich erinnerst. Bevor wir weiterstreiten: Was ist dir wichtiger, Weihnachten oder Silvester?

    With a temperature, if you remember. Before we argue any more: which matters more to you, Christmas or New Year's Eve?

    Ganz klar Weihnachten. Meine Oma macht Gans, da führt kein Weg dran vorbei.

    Christmas, obviously. My gran's doing a goose, and there's no getting out of that.

    Und mir geht's nur um Silvester. Warum streiten wir dann seit zehn Minuten?

    And all I care about is New Year's Eve. So why have we been arguing for ten minutes?
