Day 38: Saving for the London Trip

In the canteen of a school in Essen, Mathis (A) and his classmate Anna (B) talk about paying for the class trip to London.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    I've already got three hundred together from babysitting. What about you?

    Sobald ich meine alte Konsole verkauft habe, fehlen mir nur noch hundert.

    Once I've sold my old games console, I'll only be a hundred short.

    Und falls du sie nicht loswirst? Deine Eltern legen doch sicher was dazu.

    And what if you can't get rid of it? Your parents will surely chip in.

    Die haben gerade andere Sorgen. Falls es nicht reicht, bleib ich eben zu Hause.

    They've got other worries right now. If it's not enough, I'll just stay at home.

    Bevor du absagst, frag den Förderverein. Dafür muss sich keiner schämen.

    Before you pull out, ask the parents' association. Nobody needs to be embarrassed about that.
