Day 36: The Bus You Have to Call

At a village bus stop in the Uckermark, Judith (A), a young woman from Berlin on her way back to the station in Prenzlau, asks Silke (B), a local woman walking to her car, about the bus.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Entschuldigung, fällt der Bus um zwei aus? Ich warte schon seit vierzig Minuten.

    Excuse me, is the two o'clock bus cancelled? I've been waiting for forty minutes.

    Da können Sie lange warten. Sehen Sie das kleine Telefon im Fahrplan?

    You'll be waiting a long time. See the little telephone on the timetable?

    Das habe ich glatt übersehen. Muss man den Bus etwa bestellen?

    I completely missed that. Don't tell me you have to book the bus?

  4. B

    Genau, eine Stunde vorher. Die Fahrt um zwei war heute wohl nicht bestellt.

    That's right, an hour ahead. It looks like nobody had booked the two o'clock today.

  5. A

    Na toll. Dann lasse ich mir eben ein Taxi kommen.

    Oh, great. Then I'll just have to call a taxi.

  6. B

    Lassen Sie mal, das kostet hier draußen ein Vermögen. Ich fahre sowieso nach Prenzlau.

    Don't bother, that'll cost a fortune out here. I'm driving to Prenzlau anyway.
