Day 23: Asparagus Season at Home

In an insurance office in Hanover, head of department Birgit Lohmann (A) has a visit from Clara Meyer (B), a new colleague with a request.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Ms Meyer, come in. You wanted to see me?

    Ja, es ist mir etwas unangenehm, aber ich bräuchte im Mai eine Woche Urlaub.

    Yes, it's a bit awkward, but I'd need a week off in May.

    Mitten im Projekt? Darf ich fragen, wofür?

    Right in the middle of the project? May I ask what for?

    Meine Eltern bauen Spargel an, und falls sie keine Helfer finden, stehen sie allein da.

    My parents grow asparagus, and if they can't find any pickers, they'll be left on their own.

    Ach, ich bin selbst auf einem Hof aufgewachsen. Sobald das Projekt fertig ist, können Sie fahren.

    Oh, I grew up on a farm myself. As soon as the project's finished, you can go.
