Day 182: Deleting the App for a Month

At a bus stop in Kempten after school, Maxim (A) tells his classmate Juna (B) how he feels after scrolling through his phone every evening.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.

    Ich scrolle jeden Abend bis Mitternacht und vergleiche mich mit allen. Danach geht's mir immer mieser.

    I scroll until midnight every evening and compare myself with everyone. Afterwards I feel worse and worse.

    Kenn ich. Deshalb hab ich im Herbst mein Passwort von meiner Schwester ändern lassen, für einen Monat.

    I know the feeling. That's why in the autumn I had my sister change my password, for a month.

    Einen ganzen Monat? Ohne die App wüsste ich doch gar nicht, was bei den anderen los ist!

    A whole month? Without the app I wouldn't have a clue what's going on with everyone else!

    Du tust ja so, als ob du ohne nicht einen Tag überleben könntest. Genau das dachte ich auch.

    You're acting as if you couldn't survive a single day without it. That's exactly what I thought too.

    Und, hat's was gebracht? Oder hast du deine Schwester nach drei Tagen angebettelt?

    And did it help? Or were you begging your sister after three days?

    Fast, zugegeben. Aber nach einer Woche hab ich besser geschlafen und sogar wieder gelesen.

    Almost, I admit. But after a week I was sleeping better and even reading again.

    Okay, ich lösche die App, bevor ich's mir anders überlege. Und mein Passwort lasse ich meine Oma ändern, die vergisst es garantiert.

    OK, I'm deleting the app before I change my mind. And I'll get my grandma to change my password: she's bound to forget it.
