Day 178: Benched at the Youth Match

In the car on the way home from an under-10 match in Kaiserslautern, Carmen (A) tries to find out why her son Lenny (B) is so quiet.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.

    Du sagst ja gar nichts, Lenny. Bist du sauer, weil du auf der Bank sitzen musstest?

    You're not saying a word, Lenny. Are you cross because you had to sit on the bench?

    Ich war so wütend, dass ich meine Trinkflasche gegen die Bank getreten habe. Sogar die zwei Neuen durften spielen!

    I was so angry that I kicked my water bottle against the bench. Even the two new kids got to play!

    Hab ich gesehen. Hat der Trainer dir denn erklärt, warum du heute nicht spielen durftest?

    I saw. Did the coach tell you why you weren't allowed to play today?

    Er hat was von Disziplin gesagt. Aber ich hatte das Training am Donnerstag doch nur vergessen!

    He said something about discipline. But I'd only forgotten about training on Thursday!

    Nur am Donnerstag? Angeblich warst du auch am Dienstag davor nicht da.

    Only on Thursday? Apparently you weren't there on the Tuesday before either.

    Da hatte Papa mich zum Spiel auf den Betze mitgenommen. Aber das sollte eigentlich unser Geheimnis bleiben!

    That was the day Dad took me to the match at the Betzenberg stadium. But that was supposed to be our secret!
