Day 152: Tummy Ache Before Reading Aloud

Behind the stage at a school assembly at a primary school in Regensburg, Noel (A) turns to his classmate Rosalie (B) shortly before he has to read out his poem.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Rosalie, mir tut total der Bauch weh. Gleich muss ich mein Gedicht vor der ganzen Schule vorlesen.

    Rosalie, my tummy really hurts. In a minute I've got to read my poem out in front of the whole school.

    Das ist bestimmt Lampenfieber. Bevor ich beim Sommerfest Flöte spielen musste, war mir sogar schlecht.

    That's probably stage fright. Before I had to play the flute at the summer fair, I even felt sick.

    Und was hast du gemacht, damit es weggeht? So kann ich doch nicht auf die Bühne!

    And what did you do to make it go away? I can't go on stage like this!

    Meine Oma hat mir einen Trick gezeigt, um ruhig zu bleiben. Du atmest ganz tief ein und langsam wieder aus.

    My grandma showed me a trick for staying calm. You breathe in really deeply and then slowly out again.

    Okay, das probier ich. Aber was mache ich, sobald ich vorne stehe und mich alle anschauen?

    OK, I'll try that. But what do I do as soon as I'm standing at the front and everyone's looking at me?

    Dann schaust du nur deine Mama an, damit die Angst weggeht.

    Then you just look at your mum so the fear goes away.

    Meine Mama muss heute arbeiten. Aber wenn du dich hinter den Vorhang stellst, schau ich einfach zu dir.

    My mum's working today. But if you stand behind the curtain, I'll just look over at you.
