Day 144: The Country Doctor's Last Year
At a GP's surgery in a village in the Uckermark, Linh Tran (A), a young woman who has just moved from Berlin, sees the village doctor, Dr Burkhard Wenzel (B).
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

Ich bräuchte eine Überweisung zum Hautarzt wegen eines Muttermals, am besten mit Termin nächste Woche.
I'd need a referral to a dermatologist for a mole, ideally with an appointment next week.
-
B
Die schreibe ich Ihnen gern. Aber Sie reden, als ob der Hautarzt hier um die Ecke wäre.
I'll happily write you one. But you're talking as if the dermatologist were just round the corner out here.
-
A
Wieso, wie weit ist es denn? In Berlin war meine Hautärztin gleich gegenüber vom Späti.
Why, how far is it? In Berlin my dermatologist was right opposite the late-night shop.
-
B
Während man in Berlin einfach über die Straße geht, fährt man hier fast eine Stunde. Und wartet drei Monate auf den Termin.
While in Berlin you just cross the road, out here you drive for almost an hour. And wait three months for the appointment.
-
A
Drei Monate? Könnten Sie sich das Muttermal dann nicht erst mal selbst ansehen?
Three months? Couldn't you have a look at the mole yourself first, then?
-
B
Hab ich schon, während Sie vom Späti geschwärmt haben: harmlos. Aber nächstes Jahr gehe ich in Rente, ohne Nachfolger.
I already have, while you were raving about the late-night shop: it's harmless. But I'm retiring next year, with no successor.
-
A
Ohne Nachfolger? Meine Schwester macht gerade ihren Facharzt für Allgemeinmedizin und will auch raus aus Berlin.
No successor? My sister is training as a GP right now, and she wants to get out of Berlin too.
