Day 142: Mum Posted the Bath Photos
In her kitchen in Kassel, the day after her daughter's thirtieth birthday, Regine (A) greets Henrike (B), for whom she has posted a birthday photo online.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

Na, Geburtstagskind? Dein Foto hat schon zweihundert Likes, sogar deine Tante hat es geteilt!
Well, birthday girl? Your photo's already got two hundred likes, and even your aunt has shared it!
-
B
Darüber müssen wir reden, Mama. Ich sitze da nackt in der Wanne, und halb Kassel hat's gesehen!
That's what we need to talk about, Mum. I'm sitting naked in the bath in it, and half of Kassel has seen it!

Ach komm, da warst du anderthalb! Babys in der Wanne sind doch süß, nicht peinlich.
Oh, come on, you were eighteen months old! Babies in the bath are sweet, not embarrassing.
-
B
Für dich vielleicht. Wie fändest du es, wenn ich dein Dauerwellenfoto von 1988 posten würde?
For you, maybe. How would you like it if I posted your perm photo from 1988?
-
A
Schon gut, ich lösche es ja. Ich hätte dich natürlich gefragt, wenn ich gewusst hätte, wie peinlich dir das ist.
All right, all right, I'll delete it. Of course I'd have asked you if I'd known how embarrassing you'd find it.

B
Danke. Aber such bitte kein anderes Kinderfoto raus, auch nicht das mit der Zahnspange.
Thanks. But please don't dig out another childhood photo, not the one with the braces either.

Dann würde ich stattdessen das vom Abiball nehmen. Da tanzt du zwar auf dem Tisch, aber wenigstens angezogen!
Then I'd use the one from your leavers' ball instead. You're dancing on a table, but at least you've got clothes on!
